Val Demings was born in Orlando, Florida on March 12, 1957. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Central Florida and a master’s degree in criminal justice from the Florida State University College of Criminology and Criminal Justice. Demings began her career as a police officer with the Orlando Police Department and served for 26 years, including as Chief of Police for five years making her the first female police chief in Orlando history. She was also the Democratic nominee in both 2012 and 2016 to represent Florida’s 10th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives, losing to Republican Daniel Webster in 2012 and defeating him in 2016. In 2021, she announced her candidacy for a seat in the United States Senate, challenging Republican incumbent Marco Rubio; she won the Democratic nomination and lost to Rubio in November 2022.
